AbstractThe purpose of this study was to develop career-integrated English lesson plans used to teach first grade students at middle schools. This study was conducted by the following three phases: preparation, development, and improvement. In the preparation phase, the detailed objectives of ‘Career and Occupations’ curriculum were specified which was revised in 2015 and three English textbooks approved by the Ministry of Education were analyzed based on these objectives. In the development phase, the objectives of the lesson plans were set up and the lesson plans were developed by introducing class activities related to the objectives. In the improvement phase, the lesson plans were revised and completed after they were evaluated by on-site teachers and a professor with the degree of doctor of the career education and guidance and the class was carried out by the students. The results of the study are as followed: First, three English textbooks for middle school first graders cover the two areas most : ‘self-understanding and development of social relation competences’ and ‘understanding jobs and the world of occupations’ Second, the lesson plans were developed to achieve the objectives of both English and Career and occupations. Third, the lesson plans were developed to allot 5 periods : two periods for a lesson plan on ‘self-understanding and jobs-exploration’, two periods for a lesson plan on ‘simulated activities on being a entrepreneur’, and a period for a lesson plan on ‘values-exploration’. Fourth, the lesson plans were composed of the class introductions for teachers, the handouts for students, the evaluation criteria and the reference materials. The significance of the study are as followed: First, this study is suggesting the content elements of Career-education which will be included when developing Middle School English textbooks of the next national curriculum revision. Second, this study can be one of the model lesson plans that are different from the existing ones : they were developed to improve students’ communication skills and to introduce English-related professions. Lastly, the lesson plans developed through this study are providing the teachers with students’ handouts, assessment papers, the reference material, and the record examples of students’ performance. |
